Arqana yearling purchase, Kencumin breaks his maiden at the second time of asking for Ralph Beckett.
A well-backed favourite, the colt by French sire Kendargent, showed plenty of improvement from his debut third. Ridden by Graham Lee he was nursed quietly into the race from his wide draw, before getting up late to score.
Although only scoring by a length, Beckett’s charge was not given a hard race and won a shade cosily in the end, giving the impression that there is a great deal more improvement left in him. Speaking after the race, Lee said ” He is a proper sort of horse and will improve from this. He didnĀ“t like the kickback early, so I kept him out of it, but he ran right to the line”.
